Overview
The Magdalena Palace, a majestic 19th-century royal summer residence, stands proudly on the Magdalena Peninsula, offering breathtaking views of the Bay of Santander. Originally built between 1909 and 1913 for King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenie, it was a gift from the city of Santander to the Spanish Royal Family. This grand estate served as their summer retreat until the monarchy's abolition in 1931. Its construction reflects a blend of English Neo-Gothic and French styles, featuring elegant towers, stately halls, and intricate stonework, designed by architects Javier González de Riancho and Emily Conty. Visitors today can explore the opulent interiors, including the Throne Room, the Royal Dining Room, and the Queen's Drawing Room, each furnished with period pieces and offering a glimpse into royal life. The palace grounds also host various events and exhibitions. Beyond the palace itself, the peninsula offers a delightful experience. You can wander through the beautiful gardens, visit the small Magdalena Zoo which houses sea lions and penguins, or simply relax on the sandy beaches. A notable feature is the replica of the Nao Victoria, Magellan's flagship, docked nearby, which can also be toured. The Magdalena Peninsula is also a protected natural area, teeming with diverse birdlife and offering scenic walking trails with stunning coastal vistas. The combination of historical grandeur, architectural beauty, and natural splendor makes the Magdalena Palace and its surroundings a must-visit destination in Santander, providing a memorable journey through Spanish royal history and picturesque Cantabrian landscapes.
